Heroes of Might and Magic is a series that has been running since 1995 and has been a dominant force in both fantasy roleplaying games and turn based strategy since then. The series puts the player in control of fantastical armies that they can raise and upgrade from cities, towns and settlements under there control. It's always been about balancing the money you spend on improvements to your holdings, which lead to more improved units, and the money you spend on actually raising armies.
As with any series that's been going for this length of time, the games have built up an impressive lore base and long time fans will be glad to see a lot of the same mythical beasts and brave heroes back in this iteration.
The game itself looks absolutely stunning. The rich 3D environments and detailed modeling of units, both friend and foe, add a real sense of wonder to the whole experience. The various worlds you travel to are all distinct and lovingly crafted, each having it's own feel and unique challenges.
As with previous games the resource gathering and base building is easy to learn and hard to master. You'll have access to a huge array of possible troops to recruit and each hero you play as has a really singular feel to them and their recruitable units. As always you'll have to make sure you've covered all possible bases for your fights ahead.
Seasons fans have complained that this installment lacks some of the depth that the previous games and argue that Ubisoft focused more on the look of the thing than providing the complex experience they were used to. However I personally have over a hundred hours in the game and, as a fan of the series, find it just as engaging and charming as any of the previous games.
